
Dr. Anant Kumar Nepal is a senior public health leader with over 20 years of experience in health systems strengthening, communicable disease control, and emergency preparedness. He currently serves as Senior Programme Coordinator and Health Emergency Officer at the World Health Organization (WHO) Nepal, leading national efforts to strengthen resilient and responsive health systems.
Dr. Nepal holds a PhD in Public Health from Curtin University, Australia, along with advanced degrees in Public Health and Sociology. Throughout his career, he has worked with leading international organizations including WHO, Save the Children, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Merlin, and national research institutions.
His expertise spans strategic programme management, results-based planning, donor engagement, health workforce development, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), reproductive health, and public health emergency response. He has successfully led multi-million-dollar health programmes, supported national policy development, mobilized international funding, and strengthened institutional capacities at federal, provincial, and local levels.
Dr. Nepal is committed to building equitable, resilient, and evidence-driven health systems that can effectively respond to both routine health needs and emergencies. His mission centers on translating research into policy, strengthening governance and accountability, and fostering partnerships that improve population health outcomes across Nepal and similar low- and middle-income settings.
He has played a pivotal role in advancing Nepal’s communicable disease control strategies, strengthening International Health Regulations (IHR) capacities, and supporting emergency responses including COVID-19 and major natural disasters.
A published researcher, Dr. Nepal’s work on antibiotic use, antimicrobial resistance, and health systems research has contributed to global evidence and informed policy dialogue. Through leadership, collaboration, and innovation, he continues to shape sustainable public health programmes that enhance system resilience and community well-being.
